PRME Working Group on Decolonisation

WG on Decolonisation - Come to our next Reflexive Cafe on Pedagogy and Positionality on 8th October

For our next virtual café, Adis Maulidina and Sein Tin would like to open a chat about what it means to educate from a hybrid or underrepresented position within business schools within particular contexts; how our positionalities shape the pedagogy and scholarship we bring into the classroom.

Adis Maulidina and Sein Tin's invitation is as follows:

Many of us hold identities that mainstream business scholarship struggles to accommodate multiracial and mixed-heritage academics, colleagues from ancestrally hybrid societies across Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, West & South Asia and beyond, and those whose lived experience does not map simply onto the categories the discipline offers. Business scholarship tends to flatten this complexity into monolithic labels, e.g. "Asian consumers", "emerging markets", "collectivist cultures", yet many of us and our students are navigating the hybrid, in-between, multi-referent lives that these labels erase.

This will be a semi-structured discussion grounded in personal experience and practical strategies. Expect to share and hear about small, concrete moves colleagues are already making—enriching teaching materials with cases from underrepresented regions, translating our own research into teaching cases and vice versa, and thinking about how our identities inform the way we connect with students who are also navigating hybrid cultural positions. We warmly invite colleagues from any background whose teaching, research, or lived experience engages with hybridity, mixed identity, and/or underrepresentation in business academia, including colleagues who may not identify as underrepresented themselves, but work with students and communities who do. No preparation required; just gather with reflection, strategy, and question you'd like to think through with us!
