Signatory Spotlight: Lancaster University Management School

Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) advances responsible management education throughout the School by embedding sustainability, civic engagement, and social mobility across its curriculum, research, and global partnerships.

Aligned with its Strategy 2030, LUMS’s international collaborations extend this commitment across global communities. Initiatives such as the British Council-funded iSkills Career Catalyst programme, delivered with Egypt University of Informatics, enhance graduate employability by developing sustainability and digital capabilities. More recently, the British Council’s iGrow Green Careers initiative, funded by HSBC has trained 231 young people across the UK and Indonesia, delivered with partners in Indonesia. The programme promotes green skills, Carbon Literacy, circular economy education, and cross-cultural learning through B Corp and industry perspectives. Key outcomes include two participants progressing to university, two establishing businesses, ten green enterprises selected for incubation, 16 receiving vocational training and placements, and 25 trained as community facilitators, advancing social mobility and sustainability.

Community engagement and climate awareness form another crucial dimension of this mission. LUMS led the UK–Indonesia iGrow Green Careers programme in collaboration with Indonesian partners AI Labs and INCREASE. The School played a central role in co-designing, coordinating and delivering the programme, bringing together industry experts, community organisations and academic partners across both countries. With a strong commitment to widening participation, the initiative offered free access to training and travel bursaries for young people from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds, helping to remove barriers to education and employment. Participants developed practical skills in AI, digital technology, entrepreneurship and creative problem-solving, strengthening community engagement and preparing young people to become responsible decision-makers and sustainability leaders.

The greatest impact of responsible management education lies in its ability to extend beyond the classroom and create meaningful change within communities. By connecting education with real-world challenges, international partnerships and community engagement, we can empower individuals, strengthen community capabilities and translate sustainability knowledge into collective action that delivers lasting social and environmental value.
