Student Organization Mission Statement
The Strathmore Environmental Sustainability Community (SESC) is a student-led organization committed to advancing environmental sustainability within the university and beyond. Its core aim is to lead, monitor, and support the implementation of environmental policies and strategies, ensuring compliance, accountability, and continuous improvement in sustainability practices.
The organization is guided by values of environmental responsibility, accountability, collaboration, and innovation. It emphasizes informed decision-making through policy review, stakeholder engagement, and performance evaluation, while fostering a culture of sustainability among students and institutional leadership.
SESC operates across several thematic fields, including environmental policy and governance, sustainability education, resource and waste management, climate action, and community outreach. Its work spans activities such as environmental monitoring and reporting, awareness campaigns, research and policy engagement, capacity building, and sustainability-focused project development.
Overall, SESC functions as a structured platform that integrates advocacy, education, and institutional support to drive meaningful environmental change.
How has the work of your student organization advanced the SDGs and the Seven Principles for Responsible Management Education?
The Strathmore Environmental Sustainability Community (SESC) has actively advanced the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the PRME principles through a combination of education, research, advocacy and community-based action.
In 2025-2026 alone, SESC implemented over 45 sustainability-focused programs targeting environmental literacy, climate governance, and community resilience . These initiatives directly contributed to SDGs such as climate action, quality education, and sustainable cities through activities like tree planting, e-waste drives, circular economy workshops, and SDG sensitization campaigns.
The organization aligns with PRME principles by:
Purpose & Values: Embedding sustainability and responsible leadership into student engagement through initiatives like Climate Fresk workshops and sustainability-themed simulations.
Method & Research: Delivering experiential learning (e.g., COP simulations, MEA bootcamps, and AI-driven SDG data campaigns) that integrate sustainability into practical education.
Partnership: Collaborating with global institutions such as UNEP, UN-Habitat, and IEEE to bridge academia and real-world sustainability challenges.
Dialogue: Hosting public lectures, podcasts, and stakeholder forums that foster multi-sector conversations on sustainability.
How has the work of your student organization built upon creative approaches?
SESC has consistently applied innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability challenges.
The creative approaches include:
Climate simulations (COP & Global Green Fund negotiations): gamifying diplomacy and policymaking.
Podcasts and media platforms: translating complex sustainability topics into accessible content.
Cinema in Nature & sustainability campaigns: blending environmental awareness with social engagement.
Circular economy consultations and hackathons: encouraging innovation and student-led solutions.
How has the work of your student organization impacted the university ecosystem and local/regional communities?
SESC has created measurable impact both within Strathmore University and across local communities.
Within the university:
Strengthened sustainability culture through e-waste drives, SDG campaigns, and sustainability week initiatives.
Mobilized hundreds of students into active environmental action and leadership roles.
Enhanced academic engagement through research platforms like the Africa Sustainability Magazine and policy simulations.
In local communities:
Conducted grassroots initiatives such as tree planting in Kiambu, Nairobi, Kajiado and Kitui, clean-up drives, and environmental awareness campaigns.
The Mukuru Kayaba project engaged over 1,000 residents and trained 200 youth volunteers, building local capacity for sustainable development.
Addressed real challenges including poor sanitation, climate vulnerability, and limited access to education through targeted SDG interventions.
How has the work of your student organization promoted global cooperation?
SESC has actively fostered global collaboration through partnerships, knowledge exchange, and participation in international platforms.
Key examples include:
Collaboration with UNEP, UN-Habitat, and global youth networks, enabling students to engage in international environmental governance.
Participation in global forums such as UNEA-7 and Science Week at the United Nations.
