Professional Development

About

Professional development is essential for fostering innovation and empowering educators to adapt, grow, and lead in a rapidly changing world. Within the PRME community, these opportunities provide a dynamic platform to equip faculty with the tools they need. This includes skills and perspectives to embed sustainability, ethics, and social responsibility into their teaching and leadership.

By engaging in professional development opportunities—such as workshops, certifications, peer learning initiatives, and mentorship—educators can expand their expertise and gain practical tools to create impactful learning experiences. These initiatives not only enhance teaching practices but also inspire faculty to collaborate across disciplines, address global challenges, and drive meaningful change in education and beyond.

Through professional development, business and management educators strengthen their capacity to link classroom learning with real-world business applications. By staying connected to emerging trends, research, and practices, educators can better prepare students to think critically, lead responsibly, and contribute to building a sustainable and inclusive future.

PRME supports educators on their journey of lifelong learning, recognizing that empowered teachers are the key to cultivating responsible leaders. Explore how professional development within the PRME community can inspire new approaches, foster collaboration, and amplify the impact of your work in advancing responsible management education.

Climate Literacy Training

The Climate Literacy Training for Business Schools (CLT4BS) was developed by Nottingham Business School (NBS), Nottingham Trent University, UK in collaboration with the PRME Champions, the PRME Working Group on Climate Change and the Environment, oikos International, and The Carbon Literacy Project.

PRME is proud to offer the Climate Literacy Training for free to all PRME Signatory Members. The training leverages a train-the-trainer approach to help academics, students, and other participants quickly become carbon literate. The programming encourages learners to take both group and individual climate actions and offers them pragmatic climate solutions that can be adopted in their own life and work. Invitations are sent to universities and business schools for regional events so participants can become trainers in their own institutions or become involved in training in other regions. ClimateLiteracy Trainings are offered in a virtual format, increasing the potential reach and availability of these workshops.

PRME has leveraged its global community of educators, students, and business professionals to train over 1,000 people worldwide in climate literacy since it started in 2020. Our ambition is to continue scaling the opportunity to the wider higher education community.

Leadership with oikos (LEAP)

The oikos International community is home to outstanding potential, driven by students’ passion toward making a difference in the world. In 2015, oikos launched their Leadership Program – LEAP. The programme was designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to evolve into a new generation of leaders. Over the years, the LEAP Leadership Program has supported the personal development of hundreds of participants, redefining traditional leadership to emphasize purpose and a deep sense of responsibility—both to their communities and to the planet. By encouraging participants to explore different facets of themselves and build meaningful connections with those around them, LEAP inspires future leaders to lead with authenticity, compassion, and purpose.

In 2024 oikos and PRME launched a collaboration for the first time to host a new cohort of LEAP participants with a focus on developing holistic skills sets in students based on the Impactful Five (i5) framework. Comprising master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral researchers as well as educators specializing in sustainability, this cohort boasted a diverse representation, with 64 individuals hailing from 42 different nationalities. Learn more about the 2024 programme.

2025 LEAP Programme

The 2025 programme, free for participants, is currently running from mid-April to September. Participants will cultivate the mindset and skills needed to drive systemic change, with a particular emphasis on creating positive impact at institutional and community levels.

At the heart of the programme lies the opportunity for participants to engage in unique monthly workshops designed to learn and practice responsible leadership. Out of our 23 LEAP skills set, we selected 3 to dive deep in: 1) The Art of Listening, 2) Setting Healthy Boundaries Aligned with Our Values, and 3) From Conflict to Connection: The Magic of Effective Communication. 90% of the workshops are practice-based, because this is what makes the difference in the end - our level of practice and commitment to the practice. As Toke Møller from Art of Hosting says, “what we practice, we will become”.

A special highlight will be a session on Playful Learning and Education, led by winded.vertigo, expert facilitators in playfulness. This workshop will promote meaningful learning experiences through active engagement, iterative design, supportive social interactions, and the cultivation of joy and well-being. Building on the PRME Impactful Five (i5) framework, it will provide participants with a dynamic and enriching foundation for transforming education.

Another core element of LEAP is the development of communities of practice—a peer group for collective learning, skill-building, and knowledge exchange. These communities are designed to strengthen impact locally, whether at a university or within a region, and to provide attendees with a solid support system.

The accountability buddy system adds another layer of support and connection. Participants can count on the support of their fellow program participants, the PRME team, the oikos International team, as well as the programme’s coaches and facilitators. On top of that, participants have the option to pair up with an accountability buddy. Many participants have shared how this personalized touch has become one of the most meaningful aspects of their experience.

We are also thrilled to host our program once again on Sutra, a platform created by Lorenz and Natasha Sell, specifically designed for changemakers. Sutra fosters connection and conversation and is used by a range of inspiring initiatives and organizations, such as The Presencing Institute and Harvard University. Sutra provides attendees with access to valuable resources and connects you to the broader community, enhancing your experience and fostering a sense of belonging.

Who can join LEAP?

Undergraduates, Master’s Students, Ph.D. Students or Postdoctoral Researchers

Case Studies

Ivey Publishing

Ivey Publishing, in collaboration with PRME, launched their inaugural Sustainability Case Writing Awards in 2024. This competition celebrates excellence in case writing that advances sustainability in business education.

The objectives of this competition include:

  • Encouraging the development of innovative and impactful learning materials.

  • Fostering transformative change in classroom teachings.

  • Supporting faculty committed to advancing business education.

  • Sharing case studies of global businesses aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), equipping future leaders with the knowledge and skills to champion corporate sustainability.

Integrating sustainability into management education is crucial as businesses increasingly recognize their role in addressing global challenges. The Principles of PRME guide academic institutions in preparing future leaders to balance economic, environmental, and social goals, thereby promoting long-term sustainability and ethical business practices. Case studies are powerful tools for teaching and communicating sustainability principles. They provide real-world scenarios that help students understand complex issues, think critically, and develop practical solutions. By presenting multifaceted challenges and diverse perspectives, case studies foster engaging learning experiences that prepare future leaders to tackle sustainability challenges.

Launched in the summer of 2024, the awards attracted 201 submissions from authors in 14 countries, as well as stories of businesses based in 24 different countries across all continents. The strong response revealed a global interest in the development of learning materials that support students in addressing urgent social, environmental, and economic challenges.

The winning cases will soon be published in Ivey Publishing’s Sustainability Case Collection, a curated set of free teaching resources. Cash prizes of $2,500 CAD, $1,250 CAD, and $750 CAD were awarded for first, second, and third place, respectively. Honourable mentions were also publicly recognized for their outstanding submissions.

The Case Centre

PRME, in collaboration with The Case Centre, offered a series of free Case Teaching and Case Writing training sessions designed specifically for educators from PRME Signatory Members. These sessions provided certification and focused on enhancing teaching methods through creative, hands-on approaches to case study learning.

The sessions covered practical techniques to deepen classroom engagement and encourage meaningful interactions. Participants explored innovative strategies for using case studies as tools for responsible management education, while also gaining insights into developing impactful case materials of their own.

This initiative supported PRME’s commitment to advancing responsible management education by equipping educators with the skills needed to inspire and engage their students. It also aimed to encourage a culture of case writing within the PRME community, fostering professional growth and long-term contributions to the field.

Pedagogical Training

The PRME Secretariat is excited to offer free 2025 certification opportunities in innovative pedagogy for responsible management education. Educators who have been involved in the Impactful Five (i5) project—or those eager to explore creative teaching practices—are encouraged to participate.

Building on past successes, we now offer three certification levels designed to foster deeper engagement and recognition. Educators progress through the tiers by attending workshops, implementing innovative practices, and ultimately demonstrating evidence of student success.

  • Certificate of Participation: This certificate is the first tier of the series and is for educators looking to begin their journey in upskilling their pedagogical practices.

  • Certificate of Practice: For those ready to take their learning further, this certificate builds on previous workshop skills to demonstrate application in the classroom.

  • Certificate of Excellence: This certificate celebrates educators who go above and beyond, demonstrating leadership and innovation.
