Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

The School of Business and Leadership at Dominican University of California offers the Master of Business Administration in Sustainable Enterprise (Green MBATM), which has been the first MBA program in the United States specializing in environmental sustainability. The program currently has 110 students and prepares them to serve as green entrepreneurs or sustainability officers in business and government. In addition, the School offers the Sustainable Enterprise Certificate, which is aimed at MBA degree-holders seeking to supplement their MBA education with the body of knowledge of sustainable enterprise.

The School of Business and Leadership has required for many years a core course in Sustainable Development for all undergraduate business students and is perhaps one of the few U.S. business schools that do so. The undergraduate and graduate business programs at Dominican revolve around the three integrating themes of ethical leadership, globalization, and environmental sustainability.

Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

Dominican University of California has recently established the Dominican Center for Sustainability, which is the umbrella entity for all university-sponsored research, development, and outreach activities in the area of sustainable development and environmental sustainability. The Center for Sustainability is housed in the School of Business and Leadership. The Dean of the School of Business and Leadership is concurrently Director of the Center and a member of the Board of Directors of the Workforce Investment Board of Marin County.

Research conducted by faculty affiliated with the Center has been presented at such conferences as the QS APPLE (Seoul, Korea) and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The following are among the academic-community collaborative projects that the Center has facilitated:

• Under the sponsorship of Teach With Africa, Dominican graduate business and education students spent summer 2008 in Capetown, South Africa, to work with a magnet mathematics and science high school for the economically disadvantaged. The Green MBA students helped the residents establish and manage microenterprises.
• Under the sponsorship of the Gellert Foundation, Dominican business faculty and graduate students prepared the Green Plan for California. The Green Plan, which is a proposed strategic plan for advancing environmental sustainability in the state of California, is now being considered by policy makers and political leaders.
• Through the Environmental Finance Center Region 9 (a Dominican-housed affiliate of the Center), faculty and business students are facilitating the development of “Sustainable San Mateo,” a strategic plan for environmental sustainability for the County of San Mateo, California.
