Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
Our institution has achieved a significant development in the last two years: to introduce a way of to set free of a way of thinking that has been responsible for many errors in the business world: the excessive confidence on quantitative thinking, allied to the undervaluation of subjectivity. This has led to the undervaluation of sustainability, which in turn led to serious consequences. Let us remember a fragment of a recent article appeared in The Economist, (February 13th 2010, p. 15-16):
“JPMorgan Chase, encouraged managers to flag up potential problems and eyed highly profitable units suspiciously. Jamie Dimon steered JPMorgan through the  crisis by doggedly sticking to a few basic principles, such as not holding too much of anything. He also had a healthy skepticism of mathematical-risk models and metrics, even though his bank invented many of them. (…) The answer in not to reject quantitative finance but to be honest about its limits. Models have their place, but they must be coupled with more subjective approaches to risk, such as stress tests and scenario-planning.”
What Dimon says is known as one of the most important principles of Complex Thinking: it is very important to deal with opposites that at a first glance appear to be mutually exclusive, but that are in reality antagonistic and complementary at the same time.
Since 2008, Business São Paulo has introduced in its MBAs a new discipline called Complexity Management, in which Complex Thinking is a fundamental feature. Our plans include enhancing the efforts in researching and teaching the principles and practices of this discipline.
Starting in March 2006, we founded at BSP the Group for the Study of Complexity Management, which meets fortnightly. The main objective of the Group is to encourage the cooperation between students and professors, as well as to produce knowledge through writing and publishing articles, essays and case studies.
Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
BSP study centers integrated to the Research Area of the University is achieving studies and researches in the field of Complexity Managent, Telework and Innovation. Our centers are tied to the academic area of corporate programs to leverage studies with market needs and comtemporary facts.
