A progress report for the 2014-2016 academic years at the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

At the Smith School of Business, we recognize that the role of business is irrevocably changing. Business leaders are increasingly being called upon to redefine success and organizational viability through goals that not only ensure desired business outcomes, but that also enable the advancement of the quality of life for stakeholders and society as a whole. As a result, we are seeing innovations in business models and the application of business to address social and environmental challenges. We believe that educational institutions have an important role to play here.

In 2009, the Smith School launched the Center for Social Value Creation, which seeks to develop leaders with the skills to create economic, social and environmental value simultaneously. These principles are infused into every aspect of the student experience at Smith.

In our core business management courses, students learn the tools and frameworks for understanding the global context of business, managing complexity and mastering critical thinking. Part of the required curriculum addresses issues of ethics, social value creation, cross cultural communications, globalization and entrepreneurship. In addition, students can supplement this base with electives in sustainability, social entrepreneurship and issues in emerging economies and markets.

Co-curricular programming reinforces classroom learning while giving students the opportunity to tackle many challenges. Students can participate in a variety of experiential learning programs, including the Social Venture Consulting program, AshokaU Changemaker Campus team, Engineers Without Borders, and graduate field projects. The Center sponsors a number of events throughout the year in order to provide students, faculty and the community access to thought leaders in the fields of social responsibility and sustainability, including a multiple forums in the fall and the annual Social Enterprise Symposium in the spring.

Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

The Smith School supports high quality research that applies business and management expertise to the social sector including social entrepreneurship, humanitarian logistics and nonprofit management. The Smith School also supports research in the private sector in areas such as corporate social responsibility, globalization and international systems, and environmental sustainability.

The Smith School’s Center for Social Value Creation fosters multidisciplinary research collaboration and provides a forum for faculty to address research questions that surround the role of business as a vehicle for social change. The Center has awarded 12 summer research grants to Smith faculty and PhD candidates exploring the social and environmental impacts of business.
