The New Business School Model : Academic Excellence with Sustainable Impact (PRME 2013 SIP Report) - View Report Page

The first PRME SIP report for the AUC School of Business showcases how the school embeds the six principles of PRME in its three major groups of activities: teaching, research and service. Some highlights of the report include the details of the first PRME MENA Regional Forum hosted by the school in 2011, the use of extracurricular activities to promote student citizenship and various sustainability aspects of AUC at large.

Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

The mission of the School of Business at the AUC is to “strive to create an environment that fosters the development of principled and innovative business leaders and entrepreneurs who can make a difference”. Driven by this mission the school is engaged in a variety of initiates and activities pertaining to corporate responsibility and sustainability. In addition, the school is continuously collaborating with various external and internal parties in this regard. The following are examples of such efforts:

The International Executive Education Institute (IEEI)
The mission of IEEI at the School of Business is to enable current and emerging business leaders to master the necessary tools to grow their businesses in a challenging global environment. The institute partnered with the El-Khazindar Business Research and Case Center in an initiative of the John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement to deliver the “Corporate sustainability and Capacity Building” Program. The institute delivers the executive education component of the program via offering top-quality, demand-driven executive education courses on the components of sustainability management. Courses will also be tailored to sustainability practices within specific sectors such as finance and construction. All courses will be taught by academics from top universities in the region and around the world. Courses will be delivered in an interactive manner and draw upon executive guest lecturers from around the region.

Entrepreneurship & Innovation Program
The School of Business established a new Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program (EIP) which was officially launched on October 26, 2010. One of the program’s objectives is to educate students as to what entrepreneurship is and infuse them with the desire to create and innovate, by connecting them to venture capitalists, angel investors and mentors. The program also aims at creating a healthy entrepreneurial environment inside AUC serving Egypt and the region at large.

Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Entrepreneurship and Leadership Center
The Women’s Entrepreneurship and Leadership Center of The American University in Cairo has partnered with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the design and delivery of The 10,000 Women Entrepreneurship and Leadership Certificate Programs (WEL) for Egypt and the Arab world with the ultimate goal of capacity building. The center works to narrow down the gender gap that exists in economic participation by supporting a pool of talented women entrepreneurs and leaders to become active contributors to the economic growth of their communities. This is ultimately translated into sustainable development of local communities.

Student –Based Academic Clubs
Of the many clubs at AUC with School of business advisors, the activities of two clubs closely relate to the general notion of the ‘successful’ yet ‘responsible’ business model and thus economic and social sustainability.
The Corporate Governance Club (CGC): The first Egyptian student-based academic club that is dedicated to the dissemination of Corporate Governance principles, business ethics, corporate transparency, and best business practices among undergraduate students. It aims at encouraging interdisciplinary dialogues among students of business, finance, economics, and accounting who share a common interest in working in a fair and transparent corporate environment.

Entrepreneurs’ Society (ES): A student-based society which aims at spreading entrepreneurship awareness and foster entrepreneurial spirit among AUC students in particular as well as the Egyptian youth in general. Hence, forming a Human Development standpoint, ES aims at providing professional and vocational trainings to nurture the skills of the community. ES also holds various Social Entrepreneurship initiatives that contribute positively to the wellbeing of our society.

As leading regional PRME signatory AUC - School of Business held The 1st Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) MENA Regional Forum “Entrepreneurship–Sustainability–Transparency: Promoting Responsible Management in a Changing Region” (2nd and 3rd October). The forum was attended by various stakeholders including deans of business schools, academic faculty, students, entrepreneurs, NGOs representatives, and corporate executives. Presentations were delivered by more that 40 speakers from 10 different countries; Egypt, Germany, Holland, Jordan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Qatar, Spain, Turkey, and USA. Through out the two days of the forum timely topics such as responsible entrepreneurship, integrating responsible management in executive education, effective student engagement, matching academic efforts with corporate demands, and means of deterring corruption were discussed. The event was held in partnership with The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) Secretariat, The John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement - AUC, The Arab Society of Faculties of Business, Economics and Political Sciences (BEPS), and the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, Lebanon (USEK).

The event was endorsed and supported by the Arab African International Bank as a platinum sponsor. The PRME forum was also supported by The Bakery Shop (TBS) as an entrepreneurial sponsor.
