UCD SIP Report 2015-2017 - View Report

Period Covered: Jul 2015 to Jul 2017

This report sets out the commitment of UCD College of Business to the Principles of PRME, our activities over the past two years and our aims for the coming period. One of our highlights has been the creation of the Centre for Business and Society (CeBaS), which will take the lead role in embedding responsible management in our curricula, undertake important research on business and society issues, and engage with business, government and stakeholders to inform responsible management practice and policy.

Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

• We have a Service Learning program that places students in non-profit organizations to contribute to and learn from the organization in areas related to societal needs and responsibilities. It is a model that is now being adopted by the rest of the University
• We have a Community Engagement program that involves encouragement of interactions with a wide band of societal agencies and actors
• We regularly designate a non-profit as the beneficiary of events we hold such as the Alumni Ball and a day-long series of activities devoted to providing support
• We designate MBA projects and those in other programs as intended to serve the social entrepreneurship sector. In the MBA project, groups of students work full-time for seven weeks to undertake a major consulting assignment that moves a non-profit forward in its development.
• We have a required course in Ethics and CSR in our MBA curriculum
• We have targeted a major fundraising effort at raising money for scholarships to support members of disadvantaged groups
• We regularly host guest speakers from the NGO sector and have just finished hosting a conference on social entrepreneurship
• We are exploring ways to develop a more comprehensive set of programs to respond to the needs of the community of social entrepreneurs, and have engaged in a dialogue with representatives of that community on how we can best contribute

Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

• We have academic staff members who conduct research in these areas. For example, one is intensely interested in financial issues related to sustainable development
• Another member is conducting research in green consumption, ethical issues in branding, and the effects of television advertising on children
• Another is working in the area of consumer empowerment
• Half a dozen current and recent PhD dissertations have been in these areas
• We have designated a fundraising effort as intended to raise money for a Chair in Social Entrepreneurship
