HTW Chur has broken new ground with its fifth progress
report. Based on the Dashboard, HTW Chur reports
on the 17 SDG relative to 5 Principles for Responsible Management
Education (PRME). In doing so, it treats the SDG
equally and provides examples of their implementation
by HTW Chur. All current implementation efforts are
listed on the interactive Dashboard.
Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
As tertiary education institution, it is our sincere commitment to engage in a process of continuous improvement based on the Principles for Responsible Management Education. This conviction is founded in the belief that excellence embraces superior control of professional competencies and skills. In an entrepreneurial culture however, personal integrity and a strong sense of responsibility are indispensible traits to look for.
Our curriculum development across our seven faculties, Tourism, Management, Economic Policy, Information Science, Civil and ICT Engineering, and Multimedia, is inspired by a philosophy of entrepreneurship, sustainability, and responsible leadership, all of which are firmly founded in a commitment to the high standards of Swiss quality.
Our current initiatives regarding the implementation of PRME are threefold:
1. Mainstreaming Sustainability: A growing commitment from our University‘s governing body is putting sustainable development at the top of its future agenda. Hence, sustainability will be a central evaluating criterion for all academic activities.
2. Responsible Leadership: In all of our University’s faculties, professional responsibility and ethical business practices will be imperative as an integral component of higher education programs. Faculties will report regularly on the respective measures.
3. Incentive System: To spur innovative concepts integrating sustainability and responsibility, the development of course materials will be incentivized by a proper rewarding scheme. In a first phase, there will be time credits to be granted to lecturers.
Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
Across our faculties, we have been initiating a number of strategic projects to develop research and knowledge development in the areas of responsible leadership and sustainable development.
Our MANAGEMENT faculty is infused with the vision of Sustainability-driven Entrepreneurship, which we are currently implementing in projects such as regional Sustainability Networking, a Social Entrepreneurship Initiative (SEI) Switzerland, Strategic Corruption Prevention, and Cleantech industries.
Our TOURISM faculty has defined four key areas of excellence in sustainable tourism which are rooted in the core values of the term “sustainable development", thereby integrating all spheres of sustainability into one broad concept. Current projects involve the application of ecological footprint accounting to (alpine) tourism activities, effects of different governance models upon the implementation of sustainable business practices in tourism, the design of carbon neutral destinations, and the consequences of different offset-schemes, and finally research into touristic consumer preferences regarding sustainable management practices and the associated products.
Our ECONOMIC POLICY faculty has been focusing their research on the areas of regional family-oriented policies, creation of value by regional culture production and organic agriculture, integration of handicapped in the first labor market, and economic aspects of cleantech industries. More recent initiatives encompass energy and sustainability in alpine environments.
Our INFORMATION SCIENCE faculty has been developing sustainability-driven projects in the areas of preservation of cultural assets, libraries, archives, and documentation facilities by applying modern instruments of knowledge management in particular. Also, projects aimed at crossing the alpine digital divide and establishing a public Swiss garden memory have been initiated recently.
Our CIVIL ENGINEERING faculty and its Institute for Construction in the Alpine Space in particular, focuses on the specific requirements of edifices in mountainous regions where it has delivered a number of projects to develop cost-efficient infrastructure.
Our ICT ENGINEERING faculty is concentrating on all aspects of fostering responsible energy consumption. Our SALT laboratories complement our sustainability agenda in the area of energy efficiency where we help leverage the dissemination of energy efficient appliances in the market place.
Being our most recent endeavor, our MULTIMEDIA faculty is currently developing its research agenda. Besides classic media development, our thematic focus is on immaterial cultural heritage where we collaborate with UNESCO.
