This report focuses on the great strides that GCU has made to integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in to the strategic, policies and activities of the University.
Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
The Glasgow School for Business and Society (GSBS) is part of Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), one of Scotland’s largest higher education institutions, which was originally founded in 1875 as Glasgow Queen's College. The University’s mission is to contribute to the common weal by providing an inclusive learning environment underpinned by innovative international quality research; sharing knowledge and expertise and working in partnership with business, the professions and the public sector; creating successful global graduates and citizens, and delivering economic and social benefit for our communities.
GSBS was formed in 2012 by combining a number of departments into an integrated teaching and research institution. GSBS’s mission is to nurture enterprise, promote social responsibility and enable people to fulfil leadership roles in business and the community. The creation of GSBS has provided an opportunity to redesign our curriculum and programmes to ensure that the PRME principles of social responsibility, ethics and sustainability are central to teaching and learning.
Corporate responsibility and sustainability issues are already strongly represented in our postgraduate provision. GSBS developed the first MSc in Social Enterprise in Scotland in partnership with the Social Enterprise Academy, and also recently established an MSc in Citizenship and Human Rights, in partnership with the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations.
As part of its programme of continuing improvement, GSBS undertakes systematic curriculum audits to map current teaching of ethics, CSR and sustainability issues in its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and where necessary revises provision to embed PRME principles across our curricula. The School also reviews its accountability and reporting operations to ensure that its organisational practices exemplify PRME values and practices in its relationship with students and other stakeholders.
To achieve these outcomes, GSBS will create a number of PRME champions and establish a PRME Leadership Team, led by senior academic and administrative staff as well as students. These will promote PRME principles throughout the School, monitor progress and produce a Sharing Information on Progress report within 12 months.
Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
In 2018, the Glasgow School for Business and Society achieved re-accreditation via the European Programme Accreditation System (EPAS) from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) for a suite of undergraduate programmes (The Business Suite) and a specialist Master degree (Int'l Fashion Marketing). This international accreditation would not have been possible without demonstrating a clear commitment to ethics, sustainability and responsible leadership, which are central themes of the PRME agenda, an area which was highly commended by accreditation reviewers.
Glasgow Caledonian University was awarded Ashoka U Changemaker Status in 2015, one of just 30 in the world deemed excellent in the field of social innovation. The Glasgow School for Business and Society is well placed to become the leading academic institution in Scotland specialising in social enterprise and social business research. The Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health and the Grameen Caledonian Partnership are two examples of innovative collaborations and our commitment to developing new research agendas which explore the social benefits of business and management. GSBS also has particular expertise in social accounting and analyses of social return on investment.
Glasgow Caledonian University is also a member of Business in the Community (BITC) - the UK's largest business-led organisation that promotes corporate responsibility. In 2014, GCU won BITC's Unilever International Award, supported by Business Fights Poverty, for establishing a world-class nursing college in Bangladesh, using a social business model. In 2016, GCU won BITC's Responsible Business Education Award for its Caledonian Club initiative (see https://www.gcu.ac.uk/caledonianclub/).
GSBS supports the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts model of the ‘connected university’: we are committed to building links with the local community while fostering national and international connections. The School has extensive corporate partnerships which ensure that we remain relevant and connected with the latest business developments. These partnerships include those with Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Morgan Stanley, Santander, Top Shop, Air Canada, O2 Arena, and Holliday Inn, among others. School staff also have long-standing collaborative relationships with third sector and campaigning organisations and community groups. Our partnerships involve student placements, scholarship support, and providing business consultancy expertise and training.
GSBS undertakes international research collaborations and has partnerships involving staff and student exchanges with academic and research institutions throughout the world, including China, Oman and Bangladesh. The School is a member of the UK Association of Business Schools (ABS), EFMD, AACSB, and also a corporate member of the CEEMAN network, focussed on business in dynamic societies.
The GSBS PRME Champions and PRME Leadership Team undertake periodic audits of our research, public engagement and knowledge exchange activities to reinforce the University's commitment to PRME principles and outputs, and report on developments in these areas in the SIP. In addition, GSBS has joined three PRME Working Groups in which it is well placed to make a particular contribution: the Working Group on Poverty - a Challenge for Management Education; the Working Group on Gender Equality; and the Working Group on SIP Reporting. The School participates actively in other PRME activities - most notably in the management of the PRME Regional Chapter for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
