This is the Open University Business School's SIP report covering the years 2013-2015. It covers our values and mission and how we implement the PRME principles through our teaching, research, and external engagement. It includes information on our research centres, current research project in PRME relevant areas, including projects by research students, and a list of relevant publications.
Sharing Information on Progress (2013)
The report describes the vision, mission and values of the Open University Business School with reference to responsible management education. It gives an overview of how responsible management education principles are embedded in our teaching and details the modules and teaching units with explicit responsible management content. It describes our research in the broader management and responsibility area in terms of research structure, events, publications, research projects and research students.
Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
Curriculum integration and programme design (Achieved)
B120 An introduction to business studies (30 credits, 6 months) – core compulsory module for all business and management undergraduates (BA Business Studies and BA Leadership and Management). Contains study block on ‘Different perspectives on business’ (2 weeks equivalent study time) which incorporates critical approaches to business behaviour, globalisation and the use and abuse of corporate power. Student assessment contains reference to ethical considerations in consumers’ experience of a marketing situation.
B201 Business organizations and their environments (60 credits, 9 months) - core compulsory for BA Leadership and Management, optional for BA Business Studies. Contains study blocks on Globalisation (2 weeks study time), CSR (2 weeks) and regulation (2 weeks) and also a section on environmental sustainability as a driver for new business models (New Forms of Environment, 1 week). Student assessment on the impact of globalisation on CSR.
B301 Making sense of strategy (60 credits, 9 months) – core compulsory for all business and management undergraduates. Contains section on stakeholder management and CSR as part of ‘The Strategy Toolkit’ study block and also sections on critical perspectives and sustainability in ‘Where Next for Strategy’.
B324 Marketing and Society (30 credits, 9 months) – option module for undergraduates across the Open University. Whole module addresses social uses of marketing methods, including environmental sustainability, fair trade and health promotion alongside issues of ethics in marketing.
B690 The Management Challenge (10 credits, assessed residential/synchronous online module) – compulsory component for Professional Certificate in Management. Challenge based on case study of implementation of environmental impact improvement programme at fictional airport.
B716 Managing: perspectives and practice (60 credits, 12 months) – core stage 1 compulsory module for MBA and PG Certificate in Business Administration. Study sessions and assessment on CSR reporting as part of 6 week study block ‘Managing financial performance and resources’. Residential/synchronous online school involves extended exploration of case study on Cafedirect, the pioneering fair trade organization.
W822 Business, human rights and corporate social responsibility (30 credits, 6 months) – core compulsory module for PG Cert in Human Rights and Development Management and option in MBA and planned LLM.
Remainder of new version of MBA maintains emphasis on ethical decision-making, CSR and environmental sustainability as key drivers for the sourcing of cases and themes in relevant sections of compulsory modules which include finance, strategy and the action-learning project.
LLM (recently approved) will retain a similar emphasis on international legal and regulatory frameworks, human rights issues and ethical practice.
Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
Research is at the heart of The Open University Business School, underpinning our teaching, consultancy, advisory and policy work. We undertake research that involves extensive engagement with professional practice and offers wider benefits to society. Our academics are actively engaged in exploring the views and ideas that will shape future public policy initiatives, drive commercial investment and enrich our society.
Our research is based around three themes:
• Socially responsible management and regulation
• Knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship
• International management practice, education and learning
Identification of ‘Socially responsible management and regulation’ as one of the three key thematic areas of research, highlight the emphasis we place on responsible management values and practice. This is highly consistent with the wider social justice mission of the Open University. Research and scholarship activity relating to socially responsible management is wide ranging and includes:
• social marketing (ISM-Open)
• marketing and advertising ethics
• corporate social responsibility
• ethical aspects of regulation
• employee and citizen/consumer surveillance
• development of financial capabilities by consumers
• corporate liability
• medical law
• children and family law
• provision of management education and capacity building in Africa
• alternative economic and management approaches (e.g. Buddhist economics)
