2010 SIP Report for School of Management, Royal Holloway, University of London.
Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
The School of Management inaugurated a dedicated interdisciplinary Centre for Research into Sustainability (CRIS) in 2004 under the direction of Professor Dirk Matten. The Centre currently has eleven faculty members from the School of Management and Department of Geography and two permanent visiting Professors. In addition to supporting the teaching on the items mentioned in (1) above, it actively conducts an interdisciplinary programme of research across the School of Management and other Faculties at RHUL.
CRIS established a Community of Practice in Hong Kong in June 2007 which, with the involvement of MTRC and Civic Exchange in Hong Kong, studies and reports on the use of standards in managing and reporting sustainable management practice. The plan is to issue one practice paper a year and one theoretical paper per year (Dr David Bevan)
CRIS has been awarded €15,000 from INSEAD/EABIS to cover reporting on two innovative pedagogical projects in sustainability for the EU (Dr David Bevan and Dr Laura Spence).
CRIS has a developing relationship with the major food retailer in the UK, Sainsbury’s, and is developing case work with them on Sustainability issues for teaching and research purposes (Prof. Jeffrey Unerman, Dr Laura Spence, Dr David Bevan, Dr Leonardo Rinaldi).
Research specialization and publications in the areas of Corporate Social Responsibility (Spence, Bevan, Preuss, Cordoba-Pachon, Liston-Heyes, Rinaldi), Business Ethics (Spence, Bevan, Preuss), Marketing Ethics and Ethical Consumerism (Chatzidakis), NGO Accountability (Agyemang, Unerman, O’Dwyer), Religious NGOs (Brown), Environmental sustainability (Dengler), Environmental Economics (Liston-Heyes), Sustainability Accounting and Accountability (Unerman, Rinaldi), Stakeholder Dialogue and Theory (Rinaldi, Unerman, Spence)
February 2009 – Internal conference Celebrating Sustainability with cross-faculty participation to promote sustainability research within Royal Holloway and stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration.
Royal Holloway is a member of the European Association of Business in Society, which CRIS works with closely. Dr Bevan is Director of Academic Affairs at EABiS and several colleagues (Bevan, Preuss, Spence) are involved in EABiS projects and networks, including on occasion representing EABiS at international events.
FUTURE PLANS:
Developing relationships with the Aerospace industry – initial talks underway with Easy Jet and expression of interest received from the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium.
Developing relationships with the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA).
Funding has been applied for regarding International collaboration with major European business schools (Copenhagen, INSEAD, EABIS, IESE, Bocconi and others) on CSR in Clusters with a special focus on Small and Medium Sized Enterprises.
