Our first Sharing Information on Progress report outlines our very applications and actions on applying the six-principles of PRME into our education system in the last 24 months since we became a signatory.
Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
Our motivation is not to analyse the system to identify the problem that is needed to get fixed but rather to find the strengths that could be even further improved. With this motivation in mind and the further getting pushed by the 6 principles of UNPRME, we have decided to develop our strengths in the business administration programme, hence to go through an enormous structural change in our education system. The 6 principles holding the very first light into our road, we have been working on getting accredited to Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) which would guide us through our structural change and empower us further.
So far we have held several seminars and conferences mainly focusing on leadership and entrepreneurship. In addition, we have provided several certificate programmes for students, and employees and employers. We currently have courses in the area of sustainable business education, such as Corporate Sustainability and Environmental Management. We strongly believe that courses are not the only sources of education, and we can easily see that we already have established a certain level of concern for sustainability and corporate responsibility in our faculty as a whole: in our students, academics and managerial staff. It is not only through courses but also through the corporate culture that we provide.
In our university, in order to achieve a green economy, we have adopted a solar panel system. Also, in order to increase recycling, we have placed many recycling bins all around the university. In addition, we already established a culture to exchange used books between students, academics and managerial staff. This culture also can be seen in periodical projects for helping the children, especially in the Eastern part of Turkey; books, clothes and other belongings which are not in use any longer are called to help the children in need. We have also adapted an electronic system for formal documentation which allows us to issue all the formal documents in the faculty and the university. By the help of this system, we have already decreased consumption of papers used for documentation.
We are planning to increase our lectures in the area of sustainability to increase the awareness and to have more impact on change. We have been stressing the importance of green business, and we are planning to further increase our encouragement for our PhD students working in that field. Also, we are planning to hold workshops, seminars and annual conferences to increase the awareness for the importance of sustainability both in our university and wherever or whomever we could reach by increasing our radius of impact.
Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability
Our university is located at the very heart of the Turkish industrial zone. This locational advantage of ours gives us the greatest opportunity of direct interaction with leading companies in the industry, and more importantly, it gives us the inestimable opportunity of having the influence in their actions by applying our ever-increasing theoretical knowledge on real life issues and seeing the concrete and invaluable results which would be beneficial both for the society and the world as a whole. In addition, our faculty publishes several academic articles in the area of corporate ethics and responsibility which might help the companies to act more responsibly.
So far, as the Business Administration Faculty, we have mainly focused on the areas of leadership and entrepreneurship in terms of our curricular and extracurricular activities such as seminars, workshops, summits, with a slightly limited focus on sustainability. It was not driven by the fact that there was no awareness of the importance of sustainability per se but was rather because our faculty structure was not ready to implement a substantial change in our action set back then.
Driven by and eager to develop on and satisfy further the 6 principles of UNPRME, we are planning to address an even bigger importance and focus on sustainable social, environmental and economic value through the valuation we have for social responsibility, responsible leadership and the capacity for interaction with organisations and companies.
Building on the awareness and motivation that the 6 principles of UNPRME have given us, we are planning first to accreditate our faculty to AACSB which would guide our change and allow us to carry out the very substantial change of ours in a very structured and strong way by transforming all our indicators into metric forms to allow us to measure our progress strategically. Second, we are planning to empower our students, who already have the ethical codes regarding responsible leadership, also in the area of sustainability through providing them immense knowledge on ‘being green’ and its greatest importance for the society as a whole, by increasing the limited number of courses that we already offer in the area of sustainability. At the same time, we are planning to realize the very valuable asset of our location in the industrial zone first by providing them the motivation for being aware of the greatest importance of sustainable business, and the necessary guidance to transform their business into a ‘green’ one. In order to achieve this, we are planning to set up workshops, seminars and annual conferences.
