Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

In recent years, the School of Management has redoubled its efforts to educate its undergraduate students in the field of corporate responsibility and sustainability. Recent steps include:

>> The creation of a major in "Managing for Sustainability". Defining the term in its broadest sense -- environmental, social, and economic -- the program educates students who are well prepared to be change agents, social entrepreneurs, and sustainably minded leaders in a variety of industries and sectors.

>> In a recent curriculum revision, we created a course entitled "The Stakeholder Organization" which addresses CSR, sustainability, and ethical leadership from an inter-disciplinary perspective. All graduates of the School, regardless of major, are required to take the course.

>> For the past two years, the School has piloted an experiential summer program for management and engineering students. The Institute for Leadership in Sustainability and Technology brings teams of students into the field to do real-world consulting projects advancing companies committed to sustainable technologies.

>> The School is home to the Project for Sustainable Eye Care (PROSEC), which is committed to developing a business model and the technical expertise to bring affordable eye care to underserved communities in Latin America. The project started in the Lake Atitlán region of Guatemala and has more recently expanded to Nicaragua.

>> The School regularly hosts guest speakers on the subject as part of its Walling Lecture Series. Recent speakers include Dr. R.Edward Freeman (University of Virginia), Caroline Miles (CEO, Save the Children), and Jessica Jackley (founder,

Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

Bucknell has a longstanding commitment to scholarly work in the various fields of business & society, organizations and the natural environment, sustainability, and public/non-profit management. Recent accomplishments include:

>> Faculty have attained leadership roles in the Social Issues in Management and Public/Non-Profit Management divisions of the Academy of Management, as well as the International Association for Business & Society (IABS).

>> Professor Eric Martin has received funding to study organizational capacity in NGOs serving post-earthquake Haiti.

>> Professor Tammy Hiller has embarked on a yearlong study of social entreprenership, including a case study of the Sherwood Cooperative.

>> Dean Michael Johnson-Cramer has published articles on stakeholder management, including a forthcoming review of the field in Business & Society.

>> Professor Jamie Hendry is currently working on a co-authored (with R. Edward Freeman) on pedagogical advances in the field.

>> Professor Neil Boyd has published extensively on 'Psychological Sense of Community Responsibility', a concept central to our understanding of social sustainability.

>> Several faculty serve on the editorial boards of relevant journals including Business & Society and Public Administration Review.
