The 2015-2017 report presented examples of activities and initiatives in the strategic areas of Teaching, Scholarship, and Service that demonstrated our commitment to PRME and support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

Before 2015 -
The School of Management (SoM) started offering elective courses on Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability for the MBA and post-MBA Certificate program since 2007 and in the Master of Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) program in 2012. Examples of the courses include: 'Sustainable Business Strategies'; 'Sustainable Marketing'; 'Sustainable Development Policy'. In the future, SoM is planning to integrate teaching topics of sustainability and CSR more broadly into curriculum: offer subject-based signature assignments, alternative capstone project for graduate business students, and continue to offer the sustainability-themed MPPA thesis topics. An example of MPPA thesis topics is 'Stakeholder Engagement and the Three Pillars of Sustainability in Local Government Sustainability Policies: A Case Study of Ventura County'; this project was presented at the top tier academic national public policy conference. A significant effort will be made to expand the sustainability curriculum into the undergraduate program: business administration students will have more choices of CSR/ sustainability elective courses. New opportunities for experiential learning will be explored – projects, case studies, partnerships with local and global organizations, events, civil societies organizations, etc.

Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

SoM students have been involved in sustainability campus-based projects: produced projects and ideas for the institutional Sustainability Committee, participated in the Festival of Scholar annual events; and sustainability-related international competitions. In a broader scope, the students are involved in research on socio-economic development situation in the county /region. The research domains include healthcare, public safety, education, water policy, energy and climate change policy, and others. To promote discussions related to social progress, the SoM's Center for Leadership and Values was formed in 1999, and since then has been engaged in a variety of activities pertinent to the principles of responsible management. These activities range from creating thematically relevant socio-economic database to conducting regional studies and holding regional and international meetings and conferences. In the past, the Center held an international conference titled 'In Search of the Virtuous Economy: A Plea for Dialogue, Wisdom, and the Common Good' with delegates from more than twenty countries. Among other relevant regional conferences were a roundtable 'How Sustainable is Sustainability' and events on the "environmental issues along the US-Mexico border". The Center has been participating in preparation of the biennial 'State of the Region Report' based on three principal themes of Equity, Environment, and Economy. It’s one of the most important reports released in the eastern and western parts of the county with keynote remarks and panel of experts (policy makers, academics, community leaders) discussing various policy implications of the research and its findings. The SoM’s Center for Leadership and Values will continue to provide resources, speakers, organize events to promote discussions on value-based leadership. New research topics, projects in partnerships with business organizations and government agencies, as well as nongovernmental organizations will be explored. A comprehensive framework for internal (the school and university) and external (outside organizations) collaboration will be created to facilitate conducive environment for empirical research on issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability.
