Responsible Management Education at the ZHAW School of Management and Law - View Report

Period Covered: Jan 2015 to Dec 2016

The ZHAW School of Management and Law will continue its efforts towards responsible management education and make its contribution to a sustainable society. This report demonstrates how we perceived this responsibility in the period 2015 to 2016.

Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

The ZHAW School of Management and Law (SML) offers Bachelor’s degree programs in Business Administration, International Management, Business Information Technology, and Business Law. All programs include compulsory modules (such as Principles of Strategic Management, and Business Administration Skills) that address aspects of sustainable development and corporate responsibility, among other topics.
In addition, a number of other compulsory and elective modules focus on PRME topics. These include International Management and Ethics, Sustainable Corporate Responsibility, Applied Business Ethics, Corporate Responsibility, and Business and Human Rights.
The SML offers the following consecutive Master’s degree programs: Banking & Finance, Business Administration - Specialization in Marketing, Business Administration - Specialization in Public and Nonprofit Management, Business Information Technology, and Management and Law. At the Master’s level, PRME-related issues are incorporated in different contexts in several modules.
Subjects with a strong focus on sustainable development and corporate responsibility are regularly chosen as topics of Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.
At the continuing education level, the SML offers an EMBA Executive Master of Business Administration as well as whole a range of MAS Master of Advanced Studies, DAS Diploma of Advanced Studies, CAS Certificate of Advanced Studies, and Continuing Education Courses. Among these, the CAS in Sustainability Marketing and the CAS in Corporate Responsibility / Social Management have a strong focus on PRME topics.
Plans for the future include the continuous development of PRME-related topics in curriculum design and module development as well as a new Master’s degree in International Business with a module dedicated to Global Corporate Responsibility. The school is designing a series of teaching materials, which already include a textbook on the “Basics of Ethical Responsibility”. This will soon be followed by a textbook on “Corporate Responsibility Management”, among others.

Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

The ZHAW School of Management and Law (SML) runs five departments where application-oriented research is conducted: General Management; Banking, Finance, Insurance; Public Sector; Business Law; International Business. Three major focus areas in the field of corporate responsibility and sustainability have been identified for the school’s research activities:
-Enabling energy transformation
-Corporate responsibility management and sustainability reporting
-Non-discrimination law and diversity management
Each of these fields of research has a team of experienced research staff working on it, and there are several ongoing research projects funded by external grants. This concentration of research activities reflects a strategy of selective leadership, which was adopted by the SML Executive Board in 2014.
In order to guide the school’s research activities as well as activities in all other mandates, a code of ethics and a code of conduct have been adopted and implemented.
Plans for the future include further development in these focus areas of sustainability-oriented research. In order to support this goal, a Statement on Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability is currently being developed. It will be integrated into the SML Mission Statement and will be the basis for further strategic planning, not only with regard to the school’s research activities but also in the areas of teaching, co-operations and partnerships, communication and networking, as well as the SML’s own organizational practices.
