Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) intends to be world-renowned for its sustainability concepts and aims to be a leader in the sustainability process. In this effort, USM has embarked on several initiatives, including protecting the ecology, conserving natural resources and promoting human development in their organization. At the Graduate School of Business (GSB), we realize that there is a need to develop business leaders equipped with the skills in taking actions for greening business and social systems. We play a central role in developing business leaders who integrate social and environmental consideration with economic development.

The vision of GSB is to be a Reputable Graduate Business School for a Sustainable Tomorrow. The mission is to nurture competent and holistic business leaders equipped with the relevant skills and initiative needed to make a difference and to lead change in dynamic and competitive environments. This is achieved through a combination of globalised and integrated curricula, contemporary management practices, and applied collaborative research. To achieve this mission, USM has taken initial steps to reconstruct the learning program and other activities without compromising environmental sustainability. In conjunction with the vision and mission, the School has integrated the concepts of sustainability into its curriculum, at both Master and Doctorate levels and also in its executive development programs.

At GSB, aside from the value of sustainability that is embedded in each of the subjects, students are also required to take ‘Business Issues’ and ‘Sustainable Development’ as core subjects. This exposes students to various issues in relation to Sustainable Development in the context of business. Students are also strongly encouraged to identify issues that are related to environmental and social impacts of business for their mini theses. We believe this approach helps to merge business elements with sustainability values. As such, our graduates hope to become the agent to champion changes in their organization in order to ensure a sustainable tomorrow.

Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

Sustainability can no longer be ignored as an integral factor to long-term competitiveness. There is an increasing realization that there is no alternative to sustainability and how businesses respond to the challenge will profoundly affect their competitiveness—and perhaps even their survival. Research on the best practices and ideas for turning sustainability into competitive advantage has become imperative. Scholars have responded by conducting research on how businesses can redesign business models, products, systems, and processes to achieve sustainable goals, craft sustainability strategies to reduce costs and increase revenues, capture more value from green investments, synchronize green initiatives by overhauling supply chains, and integrate the environmental and social costs into their decision-making process.
