BCIT's Principles of Responsible Management Education Report 2016 - View Report

Period Covered: Jan 2016 to Jan 2017

The report describes the various ways that BCIT has into practice tangible ways of sustainability in 2016.

Achievements Curriculum Integration in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

BCIT offers a range of programs, courses, and resources focused on meeting the challenge of sustainability. Faculty can learn about how to incorporate sustainability within their curriculum through the Pacific Spirit Project, and all members of the BCIT community can access resources including a sustainability policy bank, publications, classroom materials and more through BCIT’s membership in the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. One program at BCIt is the Pacific Spirit Project - The Pacific Spirit Project3 helps interested faculty incorporate sustainability concepts and practices into their curriculum. The project commences with a two-day experiential workshop, and participating faculty make a commitment to reflect and adapt their curriculum before reconvening to share plans, and reflect on their experiences.

Since 2006, BCIT has been a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)4, a group of North American campuses working to advance sustainability. AASHE campus sustainability resources are free for BCIT faculty and staff. Simply register with your BCIT email to get access to the sustainability policy bank, publications, classroom materials, and links for campus operations efforts.

Achievements Research Development in the Field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

BCIT research focuses on activities with industrial and commercial relevance. The BCIT Technology Centre performs grant-funded and industry-sponsored applied research that solves industry challenges. Several Schools at BCIT are also engaged in applied research aimed at advancing the state of practice to help students maximize their potential for success.

Research head Maureen Connelly has recently won a national grant supporting a Centre for the Advancement of Green Roof Technology for three years. The funding, from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, recognizes the potential already demonstrated by BCIT’s Green Roofs Research Facility (GGRF), the first of its kind in western Canada.

In 2003, BCIT students, faculty and staff collaborated to design and build the Power Tower which provides a practical demonstration project for research and teaching in solar energy technology.

The Solar Canopy project, a UBC initiative housed at the shared GNWC campus, received $2 million from BC’s Clean Energy Fund in 2008 and was a 2008 BC Hydro Power Smart Excellence Award Finalist in New Technology of the Year.
