Call for Papers, Special Issue on the Principles for Responsible Management Education: Journal of Management education

Journal of Management Education Volume 33 Number 5 October 2009 647-648 © 2009 Organizational Behavior Teaching Society 10.1177/1052562909346696 hosted at 647 Special Issue Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) This special issue of JME will focus on the United Nations’ Global Compact Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative (See This multilateral effort represents a comprehensive academic collaboration between the UN and higher education undertaken to embed corporate responsibility and sustainability in the core mission and learning activities of schools of business. This special issue represents an opportunity for affirmative dialog about the role of management education in developing a new generation of leaders capable of managing the complex challenges faced by business and society in the 21st century. This focus is especially salient given the ongoing debates about the influence of business education on corporate scandals and the more recent economic crisis. We believe it is important for faculty to (1) understand the PRME principles, the evolution of the initiative, and its relationship to corporate citizenship, corporate social responsibility, ethics, and sustainability; (2) share knowledge about their interdisciplinary course content, pedagogical strategies, and curricular innovations that reflect PRME principles; and (3) critically interrogate the opportunities and challenges associated with PRME. Integrating PRME into the business and management curriculum requires distributing emerging knowledge and best practices which in turn can promote collective inquiry into associated philosophical, conceptual, empirical and pragmatic issues. Key questions may include but are not limited to: • Course Level. What are course designs that successfully integrate PRME principles? Which experiential exercises promote students’ learning with respect to the PRME principles? What professional development activities support the ability to deliver PRME principles to students? * Institution Level. What curriculum configurations support PRME principles? What political and/or intellectual challenges did individuals face in advocating for PRME adoption at their institutions and how were these overcome? Is there a distinction among PRME principles that can or should be taught at the undergraduate, master’s, and continuing executive education levels? * Discipline Level. Are there teaching and learning strategies better suited for various PRME content areas? How does PRME provide options to integrate intellectual content within and across disciplines? How do theoretical perspectives such as postmodernism, critical theory, and liberation pedagogy influence teaching and learning PRME content? How do changes in cultural or nation state environments influence PRME integration? What current educational assumptions or practices does PRME force educators to question and challenge? Conceptual, empirical, and practice-focused papers are welcome. Authors are encouraged to contact the guest co-editors regarding paper development sessions at various 2010 professional conferences.
